How do I transfer a domain from another provider? Print

  • 4

If you have a domain name with another provider, you can transfer it to us - and if you have another site with us you can point it at your other site for an annual administration fee. Here's how.

Passwords

When you purchase a domain you get two sets of passwords.

  • The first is your 'domain management' password. This is a username and password that you can use to log in and update your name and address details if required.
  • The second is your 'domain transfer' password. This is a different password that is used solely for the purpose of transferring your domain name to another provider.

Your domain transfer password

We cannot process a domain transfer without your domain transfer password. This is required because it helps prevent fraudulent transfers from being processed.  Your domain password is held with your current Domain Registrar.

Transfer process

To transfer a domain to us, you need to check the documentation you received from your current domain registrar when you set up the domain, and if necessary contact them to ask for the Transfer password. Your domain transfer password is different from your domain management password.

Note: In addition to your domain password, some domains may have been 'locked' by their current Domain Registrar. When such a lock is active transfers cannot be processed even when the correct password is provided. If your current registrar has a lock in place you would need to contact them to have this removed.

How long does it take to complete a transfer?

Transfer times vary from Registrar to Registrar. The time taken depends on the the domain extension you are transferring and the Registrar - in some cases the process is manual. A typical domain may take up to 72 hours to be transferred, but in some cases it can be completed in under 24 hours.
